How does a French furoshiki work? Is it a double gift, or do I get it back? We answer all of that here.

The concept

What is a Carédeau?
A reusable gift wrap inspired by Japanese furoshiki: a cotton cloth you tie around an object, no scissors or tape needed.

Why the name "Carédeau"?
Carédeau comes from a play on words: a "carré de cadeau" (a "square of gift") in French, but also a way of tucking "RE" — for réutilisable, reusable — right into the middle of the word "cadeau" (gift), to say that giving never really ends, it just plays on forever. In English, you can also hear "care" in it: because we give gifts to the people we care about, and because we care about the environment we live in.

Do I keep the Carédeau, or is it a real gift?
In Japan, traditionally, a furoshiki is taken back by the person who gave it, to be reused — a bit like bringing a cake in a Tupperware container: you give the cake, you take the container back. Classic wrapping paper, on the other hand, is more like an aluminium cake mould you throw away after one use. Carédeau was born to be reused, again and again.
But of course, it can also be given as a gift in its own right. In that case, the recipient keeps it: it's a real gift that keeps living on — it becomes a scarf, a bag, a table decoration, or gets reused to wrap another present.

How many times can it be reused?
Honestly? Endlessly. That's exactly why we chose cotton — a fibre that can be twisted, knotted and untied a thousand times without wearing out. Since the brand launched in 2019, our very first Carédeaux are still in use today.

What sizes are available, and what are they for?
S (35x35cm): perfume, candle, jewellery, small tokens.
M (55x55cm): a game box, a water bottle, 2 dolls, a comic book.
L (85x85cm): 2 bottles of wine, a shoebox, several board games.

My gift is round / oddly shaped / not square — will it still work?
Quite the opposite! This is exactly where Carédeau shines: a football, bottles, a water bottle, a plate, a homemade jam jar... everything that defeats regular wrapping paper, Carédeau handles with ease. Our guide shows folding techniques for every shape (round, long, irregular).

What's the difference between the Luxe Satin and Monochrome collections?
Luxe Satin: 100% 265-thread satin cotton, a specific weave, finer and silkier, individually sewn in Roubaix by an inclusive workshop that employs people with disabilities or facing social-integration barriers.
Monochrome: recycled cotton (RCS certified), a texture close to paper, doesn't slip, and makes folding easier.

Material & care

What is Carédeau made of?
Carédeau is committed to zero plastic: all our reusable wraps are 100% cotton. The Monochrome collection blends virgin and recycled cotton, under the strict RCS (Recycled Claim Standard). The Luxe Satin collection is 100% cotton, woven into satin with twisted yarns — a precise weave where the thread passes under one thread and over three, giving it that fine, silky, slightly heavier feel.

How do I care for my Carédeau?
It's 100% cotton, so care for it like any cotton fabric: machine wash up to 40°C if needed. To keep its shine, iron it on the reverse side.

Is the fabric sturdy? Won't repeated knotting damage it?
We don't have a scientific study to point to just yet, but we chose cotton for its well-known durability. A Carédeau is built to last — no need to handle it gently, it's sturdier than it looks.

Orders, delivery & payment

What are the delivery times?
Every order ships by hand from our garage in Paris, with La Poste as our special delivery force 🙂. For a French address, expect 3 to 5 days. For international orders, it depends on each country's customs: roughly 6 to 9 days within the Eurozone, and 7 to 15 days elsewhere. We do our best, but we can't guarantee it 100%.

Is delivery free?
Yes, on orders over €35.

What payment methods do you accept?
Apple Pay, Bancontact, BLIK, credit cards, EPS, Klarna, Mastercard, MobilePay, Visa.

What's your return policy?
In line with French regulations, you have 14 days to change your mind and request a return or refund, no questions asked. The item must be returned in its original packaging and unused. Return shipping costs are the buyer's responsibility.

Do you have a physical store?
We're a small brand and don't run our own shop. Carédeau is sold in more than 80 boutiques and bookshops across France, and in over 30 stores across Europe and the Americas — find them on our Store locator page. At year's end, you'll also find us at various fairs and Christmas markets — in 2026: the Salon Made In France in Paris (11–16 November), the Salon DIY Création et Savoir-Faire (18–22 November), and the Rueil-Malmaison Christmas market.

The brand & our commitment

How long has Carédeau been around?
Since 2019.

Why was Carédeau created?
To fight the roughly 20,000 tonnes of wrapping paper thrown away every year in France, by offering a reusable, design-led alternative.

Who designs the patterns?
Every pattern is hand-drawn by our design team, often inspired by French fables (e.g. The Stag Admiring Himself in the Water, The Hen That Laid the Golden Eggs).

Is Carédeau a French brand?
Yes — Carédeau was born in the Village Buzenval, in Paris (Île-de-France). We're a very small team (our stock lives in a residential garage!) with big creative ambitions. Every pattern is hand-drawn, then scanned to be developed digitally. Production is handled by partners: for the Luxe Satin collection, each piece is individually sewn and packaged in Roubaix by Recilience, an inclusive network that employs people with disabilities or facing social-integration barriers. For the Monochrome collection, made from recycled material at a more accessible price point, our manufacturing partner is a handkerchief factory based in China (PRC). At Carédeau, we believe every small gesture counts.

Yes! Our Monochrome collection uses RCS (Recycled Claim Standard) certified recycled cotton. This guarantees at least 20% recycled fibers, from industrial textile scraps, blended with virgin cotton. In short, nothing is left to chance 🌱.

We often hear the debate about cotton's water consumption. But compared to disposable wrapping paper, a Carédeau lasts a long time, replacing dozens of single-use wrapping papers 🎁. Since 2019, we have chosen cotton:
